Digital Support Technician

Organisations of all types use digital technologies to maximise productivity.

There’s an increasing demand for people who can support and implement these digital operations and digital transformation projects. In this level 3 apprenticeship, you will develop the skills you need to help a business achieve their objectives by maximising the effective use of digital office technologies, productivity software, digital communications, including collaborative technologies, and digital information systems. 

You’ll learn about digital office technologies and digital infrastructure, the handling and storing of data, and the importance of information security for an organisation. You will also gain an awareness of current, emerging and fringe digital technologies. 

The qualification will help you gain the skills you need to work in a variety of roles, such as Digital Coach, ICT Support Analyst and Data Administrator (for Digital Applications Technicians) and Digital Service Advisor, Digital Support Professional and Operations Technical Specialist (for Digital Service Technicians).

Course Content


The most common digital office technologies, modern digital infrastructure, the importance of and the technologies for backing up data securely, how to apply the processes and procedures for the secure handling of data, the concepts and fundamentals of data, the organisational importance of information security, the major types of threats and risks that apply, the principles behind an organisation’s digital presence, how best to communicate using the different digital communication channels, the limitations and extent of the internet, how to plan and organise, time management and awareness of current, emerging and fringe digital technologies.


Digital technologies, data management, digital security, digital services support, digital information management systems, communication, digital learning, organisational policies and standards, thinking skills, business and decision-making skills, continuous improvement, teamwork and work environments.


Work independently and take responsibility, maintain a productive and professional working environment with secure working practices, use own initiative when implementing digital technologies and when finding solutions, resilient and positive mental attitude when dealing with difficult situations, maintain a thorough and organised approach to work when working with digital technologies and prioritising as appropriate.

Those with an annual wage bill of less than £3m do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy. Instead, 95% of each apprenticeship is funded by the government whilst a 5% investment is required by the employer to enhance the skills of their employee.

  • Employers are also be eligible for a £1000 incentive payment if the apprentice is aged 16 – 18.
  • Employers with less than 50 employees and where the apprentice is aged 16 – 18, the government will fund 100% of the apprentice and are eligible for a £1000 incentive payment.
  • Employers with those aged 19+ the government will continue to fund 95% of the apprenticeship programme whilst a 5% investment is required by the employer.
  • Businesses can manage this through the Apprenticeship Service online account.
